Nutrition and Wellness

Nutrition and Wellness go hand in hand. Food provides people with the necessary energy and nutrients to be healthy and for their bodies to perform optimally. By eating a variety of colorful foods, including good quality vegetables, fruits, whole-grain products and lean meats, the body can replenish itself with the essential macronutrient (proteins, carbohydrates, fats) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) to function effectively. Healthy eating does not have to be hard. The key is to eat a variety of foods, which include vegetables, fruits, and whole-grains. Eat lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, and low-fat dairy products and drink about half your body weight in ounces of water. Limit salt, sugar, alcohol, saturated fat, and trans fat. Saturated fats usually come from animals. Look for trans fat on the labels of processed foods, margarines, and shortenings. Dr. Alex Jimenez and his health coach offer nutritional examples as well as describe the importance of a balanced nutrition throughout this series of articles, emphasizing how a proper diet combined with physical activity can help individuals reach and maintain a healthy weight, reduce their risk of developing chronic diseases like heart disease, and ultimately promote overall health and wellness.

Food Responsiveness | El Paso Texas Chiropractor Health Coach
Health & Wellness: Food Responsiveness

The way our bodies respond to and break down food is being studied more and commonly linked to many chronic health conditions. The reactions we have to certain foods have been known to cause international permeability and over time leaky gut syndrome, leading to inflammation and autoimmune diseases. Not all food reacts the same way inside the digestive tract, some individuals are fine eating milk while others have digestive complications. Specific genes can be tested to provide a deeper insight to how someone might respond to a food component. To test an individual’s genes, we use DNA Health from DNA Life.

Health & Wellness: Vitamin Metabolism
Health & Wellness: Vitamin Metabolism

Vitamins are essential to the body as they are responsible for carrying out important biochemical pathways. Vitamins also play a significant factor in aging, medications, genetics, and can metabolize differently depending on gender. There are thirteen vitamins the body depends on. These vitamins are not able to be produced by our body so we must obtain them from our diet.

The fat-soluble vitamins we require are vitamins A, D, E, and K. The water-soluble vitamins we require are vitamins C and B (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, and B12).

Health and Wellness: Insulin Resistance
Health & Wellness: Insulin Sensitivity

For an individual who is experiencing insulin resistance, the body’s cells have a lack of ability to respond to the action of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that removes glucose from the body and places it into our cells. Type 2 diabetes in certain families has been linked to a genetic background but we are finding that environmental factors truly unmask the genes.

To test genotypes, we use DNA Health from DNA Life. This report shows us the genetic makeup an individual has as well as their risk factors for certain health conditions.

Health and Wellness: Bone Health | El Paso Texas Chiropractor and Health Coach
Health & Wellness: Bone Health

In order to have proper bone health, it takes a lot of focus and a lot of nutrients. Bone health is not only an important aspect when it comes to our structure but to our overall health in general. Our bones make and house bone marrow. Bone marrow is where every single blood cell in the body gets created. Without proper bone health, we see dysfunction in our blood, tissues, and other organ systems. Our genes have been associated with:

calcium homeostasis
hormonal dysfunctional
osteoblast and osteoclast development and regulation
cartilage matrix metabolism
lipoprotein metabolism

Lifestyle and nutrition have a large impact on these genes as osteoblasts are driven out of control with sleep deprivation, stress, poor nutrition, too much caffeine (this will drive calcium into the urine, where it is not able to be used by the body), a lack of exercise, too much exercise, and inflammation.

The Future of Personalzied Medicine El Paso Texas | Chiropractic
The Future of Personalized Medicine in El Paso

What is a disease? Over the years the definition of disease has evolved and changed as medicine became more advanced. Years ago, people used to think a disease was an actual entity or thing that had entered the body and was lying hidden causing disruptions. Now, we know that a disease is actually a disordered function. To properly treat the disease we need a treatment that is based upon the principle of restoring disordered functions to order.

Health & Wellness: Oxidative Stress

In order to obtain optimal health, the balance between oxidation and anti-oxidants is highly important. Anti-oxidants can be obtained through proper dietary support like vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, and polyphenols. These foods interact with the free radicals and ensure they are no longer a reactive molecule.

Health and Wellness: Joint Inflammation | El Paso Health Coach
Health & Wellness: Inflammation

Our genes have been linked to playing a role in inflammation. Polymorphisms have been noted in several genes to result in higher proinflammatory markers. It is important to remember that nutrition and lifestyle interventions can affect these genes and how they are expressed.  For every one pound an individual is overweight, it puts ten pounds on your joints. This is an early life stressor that easily leads to chronic low-grade inflammation. Additionally, this can lead to diabetes, depression, cancers, and even cardiovascular diseases. We use DNA Health from DNA Life to determine an individual’s genetic predisposition and risk factors when it comes to inflammation
